I was wondering how you explain E-Sports to the 'mainstream'. I get asked what I do for a living quite a bit, so much so that I have found a near perfect way to explain E-Sports in a positive and honest manner.
I answer the question "what is E-Sports" to a lot of different types of peoples. The funny part is, some people just look at me with a weird look when I say my job title and they don't even ask. Then there are others who just ask, and they generally leave with an interested view on all things E-Sports.
I was curious as to how you explain to people what you do (if you work in E-Sports) or if it just ever comes up.

I do this: first ask them How many people do you know that play games? they most likely say loads.. then you explain that it gets boring playing against the computer all the time its more fun when you play against real people, so that brings gamers online. Currently there's over 300 million on-line gamers world wide, and if you imagine that if you have 100 people playing one game, one of those is going to be the best at that game. That is esports, this competition between gamers spurns into a massive community spanning the globe of people competing in gaming for money, with the top teams getting to travel the world, be mobbed by fans in some countries and win hundreds of thousands in prizemoney.

My approach is a little more simplistic.
You know how people play sports for a living? Well people play video games the same way. There are LAN events and people compete in leagues and tournies for prize money. They have teams just like in sports. Sponsors or financial investors support the team.
Then they usually have questions and I will answer them.

i prefer just to simply say that i am going for several showers an evening or walking the dog that i do not have and stuff... but i guess that would not work in the 'outside world'I personally would only need to tell anybody that i play games at a higher level if i was going afk for like a week in which case it would look far more attractive, otherwise there is no real point as it is just a personal hobby, unless ofcourse you did it full time and have a genuine reason not to have another full time job or attend higher education (like you) oherwise one is being way too serious, so i guess it also depends on the person as to how they respond ;D
Yea ok maybe its good that more people know about it, but if you dont introduct it in the right way it looks lame too
